Donna: Hope someday that you can come back to Flagler Beach and have a couple of drinks with us. We enjoyed your company and are always looking for your return. Hopefully we will get to see your show in York, PA in December of 2020. We lived in the York area and all of of our children went thru school in the Red Lion, PA area. We miss you and wish you and your band a very successful future. You are truly talented and your band put a little joy in our lives. God bless you for making our lives a little better in our twilight years. Renee & Tom (and the Golden Lion)

Hello there Tom,

I hope this moment finds you and Renee fit as a fiddle. We had a marvelous time at your lovely home and look forward to seeing you again soon. I promise to return to our beloved Flagler Beach and The Golden Lion. I sure could use the sound of the ocean and those fish/shrimp tacos but most of all your company.

With love,

Donna Ulisse

Ask a question...

Sorry, I don't see a question! :)

Q

Do you need to have experience with playing music to write a song?

Donna Ulisse responded on 07/02/2019
A

Hi Joe, Thanks for the question. Some people consider themselves lyricists and only contribute to the lyrics. You can be taught how to count the meter and syllables so things line up right when they are put to music. That is part of what I teach in my workshops. If you want to contribute to the melody, you don't have to play an instrument but it is helpful if you can sing on pitch and keep the meter even so things line up right. It can all be taught though.

Q

How long have you been singing Bluegrass. I just recently saw videos of you on facebook and Real Roots Radio. I'll see you at the Roberts Center in Wilmington Ohio later this month. Love your singing.

Well James....talk about being late responding to you! The Wilmington show has come and gone and we had the best time playing it. I was always around bluegrass music because my Daddy loved it and the first song I ever sang on stage was Take This Hammer. However, I forged my path as a very traditional country singer and that is how I was signed to Atlantic Records in the 1990's. As a songwriter, my publisher noticed that whenever I wrote song by myself, they were very Appalachian feeling and suggested I record a collection to sell at writer's nights and that is when I did my first bluegrass album produced by Keith Sewell in 2007. And they rest as they say is history!

Q

Who is your banjo player, with the white mustache and bald head? And what kind of banjo does he play? Awesome.

Donna Ulisse responded on 07/02/2019
A

That is Greg Davis. We call him Papaw! I think he designed his banjo and had it made so I will have to get with him and get some more info for you. Thanks for asking about him...he is so talented.
